For years, the lawyers of the Estonian Human Rights Centre, in cooperation with partners, have been working towards creating a society in Estonia where people are treated equally. Strategic litigation involves working with legal cases that have the potential to clarify the Estonian legal system for all and help individuals. Starting this year, we have decided to widen the field of strategic litigation, and people can turn to us regarding different human rights violations. Furthermore, we invite people to donate to create a safer and fairer Estonia together.
What does “strategic litigation” mean and why is it necessary?
Strategic litigation refers to the resolution of important societal cases through judicial or extrajudicial procedures, such as civil, criminal, and administrative cases. The aim of strategic litigation is to influence laws and the quality of law enforcement through individual, carefully chosen cases.
For the everyday person, getting involved in strategic litigation means that, in addition to the possibility of receiving aid with their lawsuits, their story could also bring clarity to the legal system or change case law for many others with similar cases. With the help of donations, the lawyers of the Estonian Human Rights Centre and partnering lawyers are working to create a more just and safe legal space for Estonian people.
Why and for whom is the fund of strategic litigation needed?
Up until now, we have mainly focused on equal treatment in the strategic litigation field. However, sensing a societal need, we have decided to widen the field in which we operate. Until now, we have mainly gathered donations for specific people and their cases, but with an increased number of lawsuits, there is less time for donation campaigns for people in need of immediate help.
We encourage people to get in touch if they notice that their or someone else’s human rights have been violated and help is needed to take the case to court. If the case has a societal impact, we can offer aid with representation in court in cooperation with lawyers and bearing the costs, if possible.
