LGBTI+ film festival Festheart

Festheart, Estonia’s first LGBTI film festival, faced discrimination when the city of Rakvere reduced funding for the festival against the advice of its culture committee.

The case highlighted some wider societal issues facing the LGBT+ community in Estonia, including discrimination and exclusion.

Festheart took Rakvere City Council to court for their decisions and won both times. The court stressed that the council cannot arbitrarily deviate from the decision of the culture committee and demanded that Rakvere City Council take new decisions to ensure fair support for Festheart.

The client was represented by attorney-at-law Liisa Linna (Ristal Keba Partnerid Advokaadibüroo OÜ).
