Estonian Human Rights Centre Provides Expertise on E-Voting for International DigiVote Project

The Estonian Human Rights Centre is participating in the international DigiVote project, which aims to increase trust in e-voting. Together with partners from Slovenia, Bulgaria, Greece, Italy, Germany, and Poland, we are exploring how to develop election systems in the digital age that are secure, inclusive, and democratic.

The Estonian Human Rights Centre (EHRC) plays an important role in the project, providing input and feedback based on Estonia’s experience in developing and further advancing e-voting.

Egert Rünne, director of EHRC, notes that while e-voting in Estonia is often described as a success story, EHRC approaches the topic neutrally and is willing to highlight system weaknesses. “Low voter confidence in e-voting is definitely an issue that must be addressed during the project. If it is not tackled at the societal level, we may one day find ourselves in a situation where the public does not trust even the election results.”

The project partners include leading academic institutions and civil society organizations from across Europe, ranging from universities (lead partner Euro-Mediterranean University – EMUNI, Nicolaus Copernicus University) to NGOs (Foundation for Entrepreneurship, Culture and Education – FECE, Odyssea, Associazione PRO RIGHTS, Culture Goes Europe (CGE) – Soziokulturelle Initiative Erfurt e.V. (CGE Erfurt e.V.)).

The project is co-financed by the European Union.

Since you are here...

It is important to protect everyone’s human rights, because it helps to keep stability and peace in the society. There are many challenges for protection of human rights in Estonia: intolerance has really come out of the closet. Bad things happen when good people are too passive, but together we can make a change.

Estonian Human Rights Centre is the competent, accountable and impactful independent human rights organisation in Estonia. Your recurring or one-time donation helps to stand up for human rights everywhere: in courts, in the media, in schools, in the workplace, on the streets and in governmental venues.

Donating is easy, and you can use your credit card if donating from abroad.
