On November 19, Professor Tobias Lock from Maynooth University’s Department of Law will deliver a public lecture at Tallinn University. Invited to Estonia by the Estonian Human Rights Centre, Professor Lock will focus on the relationship between the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights and the European Convention on Human Rights. The lecture will be held in English.
“We invited Professor Lock to Tallinn to strengthen the role and visibility of the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights in Estonia,” said Egert Rünne, Director of the Estonian Human Rights Centre. “As Estonia is one of the few European countries without a national contact point for the Charter, we hope the lecture will attract many students and practitioners interested in the topic.”
Professor Tobias Lock, from the Department of Law and Criminology at Maynooth University (Ireland) and founder of the Maynooth Centre for European Law, will explain how the Charter and the Convention both protect fundamental rights in Europe but within different legal frameworks. In his talk, he will highlight the overlaps and distinctions between the two systems, illustrating cases where the Charter may offer broader protection and others where the Convention remains central. The lecture will take place on Wednesday, November 19, from 14:00 to 15:30 at Tallinn University’s School of Governance, Law and Society, room A-543. Register now.
The awareness-raising activities related to the Charter are co-funded by the European Union through the European Commission.

There are many challenges for protection of human rights in Estonia: intolerance has really come out of the closet. Bad things happen when good people are too passive, but together we can make a change.
