Promoting Awareness of the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights in Estonian Legal Education and Society

In June, the project “The EU Charter of Fundamental Rights in Legal Education and Everyday Life” was launched with the aim of strengthening the role and visibility of the Charter in Estonia. The project seeks to address key gaps in legal education while raising awareness about the Charter and its practical application.

“Estonia is one of the few European countries without a national contact point for the Charter of Fundamental Rights. It is therefore crucial that civil society organisations step in to fill this gap—enhancing knowledge about the Charter’s implementation and underlining its importance in the protection of fundamental rights in Estonia,” explains Egert Rünne, Director of the Estonian Human Rights Centre.

Project activities include:

  • Conducting a survey among legal education lecturers;

  • Organising training sessions in both Tallinn and Tartu in collaboration with an international expert;

  • Running a public awareness campaign to highlight the Charter’s role in safeguarding human rights in Europe and increasing its visibility in Estonian society.

Through these activities, the project will equip law lecturers with essential knowledge and tools to better integrate the Charter into legal education. It will also raise public awareness about the Charter’s significance and its positive impact on human rights protection.

The awareness-raising activities related to the Charter are co-funded by the European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights through European Commission funding.
