The equal treatment principle means that people are not discriminated on the basis on some characteristics that they have been assigned. The Equal Treatment Act identifies 8 characteristics:
- nationality (ethnical origin)
- race
- skin color
- religious or other beliefs
- age
- disability
- sexual orientation
In case of discrimination it is important to observe that there would be a hindsight of two people in similar circumstances. For example:
- man and woman
- younger and older person
- sexual orientation: LGBT (lesbian, gay, bi- and transsexual) and other
- estonian and other nationality
- etc…
